Morgan Geist and Darshan Jesrani have dug deep
into their unfathomably large record collections
for Fabric 43 to craft a mix that will not be ”the
classic records that we’ve played forever,” as
Geist puts it. Instead, as he told Fabric, ”we
thought we’d do a mid ’80s sort of thing, which is
kind of a neglected time period.” Indeed, what we
recognize of the tracklisting seems to bear that
out: Ministry, Heaven 17, Devo are all present and
accounted for, while holding things up for the
current age will be the mysterious Baby
Oliver-widely rumored to be Geist himself-who
turns up with ”Feelings 2.

” Coming on the heels of
last year’s James Murphy and Pat Mahoney mix, we
get the sense that this will act as a nice
continuation of the party atmosphere that the
series has opened more fully up to of late.

MY BEST ALBUM 2008!!!

LEE JONES - ELECTRONIC FRANK 2OO8

As one third of My My, Lee Jones is responsible for one of the few great techno albums to have emerged in recent years: 2006’s sonorous, sky-scraping Songs For The Gentle. Since then, My My have been dormouse-quiet, and Jones has turned his attentions to solo work for Will Saul’s Aus and Simple labels – the culmination of which is Electronic Frank.

We begin appropriately enough, with 'Beginn' – a typically bijoux, micro-edited house track coloured with Middle Eastern string and vocal textures. It’s a strong start, and you find yourself wondering whether the British-born, Berlin-based producer can pull off a whole album of the stuff. Thankfully, our man is on form: 'Honey & Ginger' is the perfect marriage of sugar and spice, ‘Roadwork’ has all the swing and elastic energy of primetime Mike Shannon or Alex Under, while the clipped orchestral flourishes of 'Theme For Frank' are absolutely delightful. Neo-trance-fest ‘MDMAzing’ is just about ecstatic enough to justify the godawful pun.

Elsewhere Electronic Frank proves to be an album that’s easy to like, but difficult to love. The title of ‘Every Click Matters’ provides a clue as to why this might be: sometimes the pictures Jones paints are so busy, so full of colour and detail, that a sense of the whole, the larger narrative, can pass you by - to the music's ultimate detriment. Sometime the clicks are made to matter a little bit too much.

If I judge Jones harshly (and obtusely), it’s because I find it hard to accept a producer so supremely talented making anything less than a masterpiece. Unreasonable expectations aside, Electronic Frank gives lie to the notion that minimal techno is boring, craftless, unorganic – indeed, in Lee Jones’ hands, it positively squirms with life.(factmagazine 16.10.08)
